Ziama Massif Biosphere Reserve
Nzérékoré
The Ziama Massif Biosphere Reserve, located in the Nzérékoré Region of southeastern Guinea, is a protected natural area encompassing a forested mountain range that extends into Liberia as the Kpo Range. The reserve features diverse landscapes including valleys, plateaus, rounded ridges, rocky peaks, sheer cliffs, and granite outcrops, with elevations reaching nearly 1,400 meters. It covers approximately 116,170 hectares, with a core protected area surrounded by a buffer zone. Receiving 1,700 to 2,000 mm of rainfall annually, the reserve is part of the Guinean montane forests ecoregion and serves as a vital refuge for flora and fauna distinct from the surrounding lowlands. The area supports over 1,300 plant species and more than 500 animal species, including 287 bird species, earning it recognition as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. Established as a nature reserve in 1932 and designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1980, the Ziama Massif represents a remnant of the diminishing Upper Guinean forest formation, making it a crucial site for conservation and ecological research.
