Lake Enriquillo, located in the southwestern Dominican Republic, is the largest lake in both the country and the entire Caribbean region. It is a hypersaline, endorheic lake, meaning it has no natural outlet, resulting in high salinity levels that can exceed those of seawater. The lake lies 46 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point on any island country worldwide. Its basin spans across the provinces of Bahoruco and Independencia, bordering Haiti. The lake's area has fluctuated significantly, notably doubling between 2004 and 2009, impacting the fate of its islands. Historically, three islands existed within the lake, but rising water levels have submerged two, leaving only Isla Cabritos. The lake's unique geological setting in a linear depression formed by tectonic activity contributes to frequent tremors in the region. Ecologically, Lake Enriquillo supports the largest population of American crocodiles in the Caribbean, alongside several endemic and endangered species of fish, iguanas, snakes, and birds such as American flamingos. The surrounding arid landscape hosts specialized plants like endemic cacti. Since 1974, the area has been protected as a national park and later included in the Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve, emphasizing its environmental importance. Named after the indigenous Taíno leader Enriquillo, who resisted Spanish colonization, the lake holds cultural as well as natural significance.

Historia

Lake Enriquillo was named after the Taíno cacique Enriquillo, who led a rebellion against Spanish colonizers in the early 16th century and sought refuge in the nearby mountains.

Originally called Lake Xaragua, reflecting the indigenous chiefdom, the lake's basin formed approximately one million years ago when a former marine strait filled with sediments.

2004

Over centuries, the lake's area and water levels have fluctuated, with notable flooding between 2004 and 2009 that submerged two of its three islands.

The region's geological activity, including the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault, has influenced its landscape and ecosystem development.
