Historia
Originally, the Kiel Canal was crossed by two single-track swing bridges built in the late 19th century.
Due to canal expansion and military strategic needs in the early 20th century, these were replaced by the Rendsburg High Bridge constructed from 1911 to 1913.
The bridge was designed to allow uninterrupted rail traffic above the canal with a clearance of 42 meters, necessitating long approach embankments and a 360-degree loop to connect to Rendsburg station.
It was the heaviest steel construction in the world at the time, using over 17,000 tons of steel.
The bridge opened on October 1, 1913, and during World War II, it was militarized with anti-aircraft defenses.
The railway line was electrified in 1995.
The transporter gondola beneath the bridge has been in service since December 1913, with the current gondola rebuilt and modernized after a 2016 accident.
