Multimar Wattforum, located in Tönning, Schleswig-Holstein, is the largest information center dedicated to the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Opened in 1999 and expanded multiple times, it offers visitors an immersive experience into the diverse habitats of the Wadden Sea, including tidal flats, salt marshes, and coastal ecosystems. The center features over 30 aquariums with a total volume exceeding 500,000 liters, serving both as exhibition spaces and breeding stations for endangered species like the spotted seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus) and catsharks. A highlight is the life-size replica of a 17.5-meter sperm whale, commemorating a whale that stranded near Denmark in 1997. In 2023, the facility was further enhanced with an otter house, presenting Eurasian otters in a naturalistic outdoor enclosure alongside educational exhibits on nature and species conservation. Interactive elements include a large panoramic aquarium where divers feed fish while visitors can ask questions via microphone, creating an engaging educational environment for all ages. The Multimar Wattforum is operated by the NationalparkService gGmbH and attracts around 200,000 visitors annually, serving as a vital gateway to understanding and appreciating the unique UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea ecosystem.
