Buracona – Blue Eye

Buracona, also called the Blue Eye, is a captivating natural feature located on the northwest coast of Sal Island in Cape Verde. This sea cave is famous for a unique optical phenomenon where sunlight entering through a natural underwater tunnel illuminates the water inside the cave, creating a bright blue 'eye' effect visible primarily between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., especially in summer. The seawater flows into the cave through this underwater passage, which also allows divers to swim into the sea from inside the cave. Near the Blue Eye, visitors can enjoy a naturally formed swimming pool, ideal for cooling off and picnicking. The site is accessible by car about 6 kilometers north of the town of Palmeira, with parking available near Monte Leste mountain. There is a small restaurant on site offering meals, making it a pleasant spot for visitors. To avoid crowds, early arrival is recommended as the area can attract tour groups. Access to Buracona requires a small entrance fee, supporting the maintenance of this natural attraction.
