Originally a subdivision of the municipality Valle, it became a corregimiento of El Valle before gaining official municipal status in 1915, with formal operations starting in 1918.
The relocation of the municipal seat from El Valle to Nuquí was influenced by local leadership and familial ties.
Over time, Nuquí developed from a resource extraction area into a community focused on fishing, agriculture, and increasingly, ecotourism.
