Wulff Castle
Valparaíso
Wulff Castle is a historic castle situated on the coast of Viña del Mar, Chile, overlooking the sea. Originally built between 1905 and 1906 by Gustavo Adolfo Wulff Mowle, a German businessman who migrated to Chile, the castle was inspired by an old mansion from Liechtenstein and features a distinctive German-French architectural style. The structure originally had three towers and was built with stone foundations and wooden coverings. In the late 1910s, architect Alberto Cruz Montt remodeled the castle, covering it in stone and adding a circular tower connected by a medieval-style bridge, as well as enlarging the windows. After Wulff's death in 1946, the castle was modified by Esperanza Artaza Matta, who removed two of the three towers and added an English-style stone structure. The city of Viña del Mar acquired the castle in 1959, and it served as the Chilean Navy Forces Museum from 1960 to 1988. Later, it housed the collection of writer Salvador Reyes Figueroa until 1999. Since 2005, it has been the headquarters of the Heritage Unit of the Municipality of Viña del Mar and also functions as a cultural exhibition center. The castle was declared a National Historical Monument by Chilean law in 1995, recognizing its architectural and cultural significance. Its scenic location on the coastline and unique blend of architectural styles make it a remarkable landmark and popular tourist attraction in the region.
