The villa "l’Hermitage" was constructed between 1850 and 1853 for Charles-Juste Bugnion on land he acquired in 1841.

Initially a private residence with adjacent gardens, it soon became a favored venue for social events among Lausanne’s elite.

1976

In 1976, the Bugnion family donated the villa to the city, leading to the establishment of the Fondation de l’Hermitage with the mission to restore, preserve, and promote the building.

Since its opening as a museum, it has hosted over 80 exhibitions, attracting millions of visitors.

The museum's collections and building are listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Significance.
