Sankuru River

Sankuru

The Sankuru River, also known locally as Mto Sankuru in Swahili, is a significant natural waterway in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Stretching about 1,200 kilometers, it is the longest tributary feeding into the Kasai River. The river flows predominantly northward before turning west, passing through several towns including Lusambo, an important regional center. Upstream from its confluence with the Mbuji-Mayi tributary, the river is also referred to as Lubilash or Lubilanji. Its course traverses a variety of ecological zones, contributing to both the local biodiversity and the livelihoods of communities along its banks. The Sankuru eventually merges with the Kasai River near Bena-Bendi, playing a vital role in the hydrological network of the region and supporting transportation and fishing activities.
