Tchegera Island is a crescent-shaped volcanic caldera island located within Virunga National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formed from a long-extinct volcano partially submerged by Lake Kivu, the island features black sand shores and two main peaks rising 21 and 12 meters above the lake. Its landscape is dominated by volcanic rock and native arboreal species, supporting a diverse habitat for numerous bird species, making it a prime spot for birdwatching. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Virunga's highest volcanoes, including Mikeno, Karisimbi, Nyiragongo, and Nyamulagira, with the latter two offering spectacular nocturnal lava lake displays. The island hosts safari-style tented camps equipped with modern amenities powered sustainably by solar and biogas systems. Activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, nature walks, swimming, and fishing provide immersive experiences in the island's tropical climate. As a tranquil retreat following gorilla treks or volcano hikes, Tchegera Island combines natural beauty, wildlife observation, and eco-tourism in a unique setting.

Consejo: The best time to visit Tchegera Island is during the dry season to avoid partial submersion of the central region. Advance booking of safari-style tented camps is recommended due to limited accommodation. Visitors should prepare for boat transfers from Goma harbor, lasting 15 to 20 minutes. Sustainable facilities and guided nature walks enhance the experience. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars to spot species like the African fish eagle.
