Historia
Virunga National Park was originally established in 1925 as Albert National Park, the first national park in the Congo, aimed at wildlife preservation and scientific research.
It initially covered a smaller area around extinct volcanoes but was extended in 1929 to include the Virunga Mountains and adjacent territories.
Throughout the 20th century, the park expanded and underwent administrative changes, including the merger of two parks in 1969 under the current name.
The park's history has been marked by the displacement of indigenous peoples and challenges from human activities such as cattle grazing and illegal hunting.
In 1979, Virunga was recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding biodiversity.
Despite ongoing conflict and threats, it remains a critical conservation area and was designated a Ramsar wetland site in 1996.
