The East Coast Trail (ECT) is a remarkable long-distance coastal footpath stretching over 336 kilometres along the eastern coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Established in 1994, the trail comprises 25 linked wilderness paths that pass through more than 30 small coastal communities on the Avalon Peninsula. The route offers hikers dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean, rugged cliffs, and diverse marine and plant life, including seasonal sightings of icebergs, whales, and seabirds. Along the trail, visitors encounter eight historic lighthouses and several National Historic Sites such as Signal Hill, Cape Spear, and Ferryland, the latter being the site of the 17th-century Colony of Avalon. The trail is maintained by the East Coast Trail Association and is continuously extended and improved, with sections ranging from a few hours to a full day of hiking. It traverses varied terrain, including wilderness clifftop plateaus that sometimes require fixed ropes for steep climbs. While designated camping spots exist, most hikers opt for accommodations in local communities, allowing an immersive cultural experience alongside natural exploration. The East Coast Trail is recognized as one of the best adventure destinations, celebrated for its combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and challenging hiking opportunities.

Consejo: The best time to hike the East Coast Trail is during the late spring to early fall months to enjoy favorable weather and wildlife sightings. Some trail sections are challenging with steep climbs requiring fixed ropes, so appropriate hiking gear and physical preparation are recommended. It is advisable to plan your hike in sections, as individual paths vary from a few hours to a full day. Purchasing or reserving accommodations in nearby communities in advance is recommended, especially during peak seasons. While some designated camping spots are available, many hikers prefer local lodgings. Checking updated trail conditions and maps from the East Coast Trail Association before your visit can enhance safety and experience.
