Historia
Fogo Island's early settlements were established due to the abundant codfish, which shaped the island's economy and population.
However, overfishing led to a severe decline in cod stocks and economic hardship, culminating in a moratorium on cod fishing in 1992.
This caused population decline and abandoned buildings.
Zita Cobb, originally from Fogo Island but successful in the fibre-optics industry, returned to establish Shorefast to revitalize the community.
The Fogo Island Inn, completed in 2013, is part of this vision to foster economic and cultural resilience through sustainable tourism and arts initiatives.
