Historia
The Butchart Gardens originated in 1904 when Robert and Jennie Butchart settled near a limestone quarry on Vancouver Island.
After the quarry was depleted in 1909, Jennie transformed it into the Sunken Garden, completed in 1921.
Over the following decades, the gardens expanded with the addition of Italian and rose gardens, designed by prominent landscape architects.
The gardens were gifted to the Butchart family’s grandson in 1939 and have been managed by successive generations since.
In 2004, the gardens were designated a National Historic Site of Canada, marking their cultural and historical importance.
