Shipstern Conservation & Management Area (Shipstern C&MA) is a protected natural reserve located in the Corozal District of northeastern Belize, covering approximately 21,500 acres. It encompasses diverse habitats centered on Shipstern Lagoon, one of the larger inland lagoon systems in Belize, as well as smaller parcels such as the forest lake Xo-Pol. The area features a mix of seasonal forests, including a rare dry coastal tropical forest type found only here and in Bacalar Chico National Park on Ambergris Caye. This ecological diversity makes Shipstern C&MA one of Belize's ten most important nature reserves. The reserve is owned and managed by the Corozal Sustainable Future Initiative (CSFI), a Belizean NGO supported by European zoos through the International Tropical Conservation Fund. Originally established in 1990 as Shipstern Nature Reserve, it was entered into a trust in perpetuity in 2012 to ensure its long-term conservation. The reserve is also notable for its butterfly production centre, initially created by English businessman Clive Farrell in the 1980s, which now serves as a tourism exhibit. Shipstern C&MA plays a key role in regional conservation efforts, also managing adjacent protected areas like Honey Camp National Park and Freshwater Creek Forest Reserve. Its management focuses on conservation, sustainable forestry, tourism, and community engagement, with a dedicated team ensuring the area's ecological integrity.
