The building housing Museu da Gente Sergipana was originally constructed in 1926 and known as Atheneuzinho.
It was restored by the State Bank of Sergipe (Banese) in partnership with the state government before its 2011 inauguration as a museum.
Since opening, the museum has been recognized for its architectural excellence and innovative multimedia design, receiving awards such as "Best of Architecture" in 2012 and "Attraction of the Year" in 2013.
The artistic direction was created by Marcello Dantas, who also contributed to the Museum of the Portuguese Language in São Paulo.
