Historia

1927

Founded by Ricardo Brennand, a Brazilian businessman and collector born in 1927, the institute was inaugurated in 2002 to house his extensive collections.

Brennand began collecting armory in the 1940s, gradually amassing one of the world's largest melee weapons collections.

In the 1990s, he sold some of his businesses to fund the museum's creation, focusing acquisitions on the Dutch colonial period in Brazil, including significant works by Frans Post.

2003

The institute opened with a landmark exhibition of Albert Eckhout's paintings and was later honored by a visit from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, who inaugurated the permanent Frans Post collection in 2003.
