The Shrine of the Lord of the Peña was established following the discovery of the Virgin Mary's image by Simón Vela on May 19, 1434, at the mountain's summit.

From 1436, with support from King Juan II of Castile and the involvement of Lope de Barrientos, the Dominican order took charge of the image and its hermitage.

1445

Construction of the convent and expansion of the church began in 1445 and were completed by 1450.

Over the centuries, the sanctuary saw additions such as a 16th-century sacristy, a 17th-century neoclassical façade and stairway, and an 18th-century tower.

The site was granted jurisdictional privileges by Carlos V in the 16th century.

1835

The Dominican community was dissolved in 1835 due to the Mendizábal confiscations but returned in 1900 to restore the shrine.
