The museum takes its name from the Abipón chief Ichoalay, whose mediation helped establish the Jesuit reduction San Fernando del Río Negro in 1750.
Initially housed within the Escuela Normal Superior No.
87, it became dependent on the Subsecretaría de Cultura de la Provincia (now Instituto de Cultura) in 2000, with independent access from Necochea Street.
