Mausoleum of Agostinho Neto
Luanda
The Mausoleum of António Agostinho Neto (MAAN) is a prominent monument located in Luanda, Angola, dedicated to the first president of the Republic of Angola, Agostinho Neto. Situated on an 18-hectare campus at Praia do Bispo, its most striking feature is a 120-meter tall concrete spire designed in a brutalist constructivist style, popularly known as "Foguetão" or "Space Rocket," symbolizing Neto's poem "Pathway to the Stars." The mausoleum houses the embalmed remains of Neto and, since 2022, those of his successor José Eduardo dos Santos. The pyramid base contains the sarcophagus and is adorned with the Angolan emblem, the machete-cogwheel-and-star. Visitors can explore a gallery of bronze sculptures in neo-socialist realist style, commemorative plaques with eulogies and quotations, and an engraving of Neto's signature alongside his poetry. The complex also includes a museum, exhibition gallery, library, video library, and documentation center, making it a rich cultural and historical site. The mausoleum's design and construction involved collaboration between Angola, the Soviet Union, Brazil, and North Korea, reflecting both political and artistic influences. As one of the tallest landmarks in Luanda until 2018, MAAN serves as a symbol of national pride and remembrance, hosting significant events such as presidential inaugurations and state wakes.

Historia
Following the death of Agostinho Neto in 1979, the Angolan government commissioned the Soviet Union to design and build a mausoleum in his honor.
Construction began in 1982 on what would have been Neto's 60th birthday but was halted in the late 1980s due to economic difficulties, the Angolan Civil War, and the Soviet Union's dissolution.
Efforts to resume construction restarted in 1998 with Brazilian architectural input, and the project was completed in 2011.
The mausoleum was officially inaugurated in 2012 on the 90th anniversary of Neto's birth.
Funded by Angola's MPLA party in partnership with North Korea, MAAN was the tallest structure in Luanda until 2018 and has since been a site for major national ceremonies.
