Ilha do Cabo, also known as Ilha de Luanda, is a narrow sandy peninsula located off the coast of Luanda, Angola's capital. Formed by sedimentation, it lies adjacent to the Fortress of São Miguel and is connected to the city by a narrow passage. Historically inhabited by the Axi-lwanda people, the island was significant as a currency gathering site before Portuguese settlement in 1575. The Portuguese established the first church in Angola here, Nossa Senhora do Cabo, marking the island's early colonial importance. Today, Ilha do Cabo serves as a popular leisure destination with numerous hotels, bars, restaurants, flea markets, and marinas. The island is culturally vibrant, home to the União Mundo da Ilha carnival group known for Varina and Semba dance styles, and hosts the Clube Náutico da Ilha de Luanda sports club. Traditional local dishes such as Mufete and Muzongué reflect the area's rich culinary heritage. It offers a refreshing escape from the city bustle, especially on weekends, blending historical significance with contemporary Angolan culture and seaside charm.

Historia

Ilha do Cabo was originally inhabited by the Axi-lwanda subgroup of the Ambundu people, who used the island as a site to collect zimbo shells, a form of currency for the Kongo Empire.

1575

In 1575, Portuguese navigator Paulo Dias de Novais arrived with settlers, establishing a foothold on the island and building the first church in Angola, Nossa Senhora do Cabo.

Shortly after, the Portuguese moved to the mainland, founding Luanda opposite the island.

Over centuries, the island evolved from a strategic colonial outpost to a vibrant cultural and recreational area connected administratively to Luanda's Ingombota municipality.
