The Franklin County Agriculture Society purchased the land in 1852 to host the Franklin County Fair, later becoming the Ohio State Fair site until 1884.
After the fair relocated, the area was designated a public park in 1886.
Inspired by the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, the conservatory's glass structure was built in 1895 in Victorian style.
It was managed by Columbus Recreation and Parks Department until 1989.
The original Palm House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
