Geschichte

1929

The Empire State Building was developed on the former site of the Waldorf–Astoria Hotel, acquired in 1929 by Empire State Inc.

Its design was revised fifteen times to ensure it would be the world's tallest building.

1930

Construction began on March 17, 1930, and remarkably, the building opened just thirteen and a half months later on May 1, 1931.

Initially, the building struggled financially due to the Great Depression and World War II, not turning a profit until the early 1950s.

1970

It remained the tallest building globally until 1970 and reclaimed New York City's tallest status after the September 11 attacks until surpassed in 2012 by One World Trade Center.
