Blanchard Springs Caverns is a remarkable cave system located within the Ozark–St. Francis National Forest in northern Arkansas. It is unique as the only tourist cave owned by the U.S. Forest Service and the only federally owned cave outside the National Park System. The caverns feature three distinct levels accessible via guided tours, including the Dripstone Trail and the Discovery Trail, which showcase spectacular formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and the striking Giant Flowstone. The cave is a "living" system where calcite formations continue to grow due to active water seepage. Visitors can experience beautifully lit rooms with paved trails and handrails, as well as a "Wild Cave" tour for more adventurous exploration of undeveloped sections. The cave's formation dates back over 350 million years to ancient seas, with passages carved primarily below the water table. The constant year-round temperature of about 58 °F (14 °C) and the presence of Mirror Lake, a trout pond fed by a mountain spring, add to the cave's allure. A visitor center offers educational exhibits, a gift shop, and facilities to enhance the experience.
