History

1940

The Chaguaramas Peninsula, where Macqueripe Bay is located, was leased to the United States in 1940 for the construction of Naval Base Trinidad during World War II under the Destroyers for Bases Agreement.

1963

The area was returned to Trinidad and Tobago in 1963 after the base was scaled back.

1973

Chaguaramas was also the intended site for the capital of the West Indies Federation and later became the place where the Treaty of Chaguaramas was signed in 1973, establishing the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM).
