The Old Foundry Museum, located in Kragujevac within the Šumadijski okrug, is housed in the oldest surviving part of Serbia's military factory and artisan school, dating back to the mid-19th century. Constructed between 1851 and 1853, the building originally served as a foundry and smithy, integral to the nation's early efforts to produce artillery and military equipment. It holds the status of a cultural monument of great importance, protected by the state since 1953. The museum's collections include historical weapons, tools, machinery, archival materials, photographs, and various honors such as medals and trophies. Architecturally, the building is a representative example of European industrial design of its era, featuring a painted brick facade, concrete, and iron elements, with a hall structure comprising side aisles and a central skylight. The foundry played a crucial role in Serbia's military and economic development, evolving into a modern factory by the late 19th century under the guidance of notable engineers and directors. Today, the museum offers visitors insight into Serbia's industrial heritage and the historical significance of the Topolivnica (artillery foundry) complex.

History

1851

The Old Foundry building was constructed between 1851 and 1853 on the right bank of the Lepenica River, making it the oldest preserved part of the military factory and the military artisan school in the Principality of Serbia.

The necessity for an artillery foundry arose early during the First and Second Serbian Uprisings due to the urgent need for weapons and military supplies.

1848

Initially established in Belgrade in 1848, the foundry was relocated to Kragujevac in 1851 by the decision of Prince Alexander Karađorđević and on the proposal of Ilija Garašanin.

The foundry was pivotal not only for military and political strengthening but also for Serbia's economic and social development.

1882

By the late 19th century, it underwent significant modernization, becoming a European-style factory with new halls constructed, including the foundry hall built in 1882.

1854

The facility later became known as the Military-Technical Institute, with key figures like engineer Todor Toša Selesković and director Charles Lubry contributing to its growth and the establishment of the first artisan school in 1854.
