The Santa Luzia Funicular, located in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, is a historic funicular railway that connects the city's railway station to the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia atop the Santa Luzia hill. Opened in 1923, it is the longest funicular in Portugal, covering a distance of 650 meters with a vertical rise of 160 meters. The ride takes approximately seven minutes, offering passengers scenic views of the city and the surrounding landscape. The funicular operates with two counterbalanced carriages that pass each other midway, powered by an electric motor with diesel backup. Each carriage accommodates up to 20 passengers and can transport bicycles and wheelchairs. After a period of disuse and degradation starting in 2001, it was restored and reopened in 2007 under municipal management. The funicular is not only a practical transport link but also a popular tourist attraction, providing access to the iconic sanctuary and panoramic vistas of Viana do Castelo and the Atlantic coast.
