History
Mount Gaustatoppen was first ascended in August 1810 during a scientific expedition by geologist Jens Esmark and botanist Christen Smith.
At that time, it was measured to determine if it was Norway's highest peak, but it was found to be lower than Snøhetta.
Esmark's measurements also contributed to the understanding of the Rjukanfossen waterfall's height, which he noted as the highest known waterfall in Europe and the world at the time.
The mountain's name possibly derives from Old Norse, relating to water flowing and a boat landing place.
Over the centuries, Gaustatoppen has become a significant natural landmark and a hub for telecommunications, with a tower erected on its summit.
