History
The construction of Kuala Lumpur Tower began with a groundbreaking ceremony led by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on 1 October 1991.
It was built in three phases: widening roads and excavation, foundation and basement construction, and finally, building the tower’s superstructure starting in 1994.
The tower’s antenna was installed during the topping-out ceremony on 13 September 1994, reaching its final height of 421 meters.
Officially opened to the public on 23 July 1996, it was Malaysia’s tallest structure until surpassed by the Petronas Twin Towers in 1999.
Since its inauguration, the tower has been operated by Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd under concession agreements, with ownership retained by the Malaysian government.
In recent years, the concession has been transferred to private management, reflecting the tower's evolving role from telecommunications to hospitality and tourism.
