Pfaffenthal Lift
Luxembourg
The Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator is a public elevator in Luxembourg City that links the elevated historic quarter of Ville Haute with the Pfaffenthal neighborhood in the Alzette valley below. Opened in 2016, it was designed to enhance pedestrian and bicycle connectivity across the city's challenging topography of plateaus and deep gorges. The elevator provides panoramic views of the Alzette River valley, making it not only a functional transport link but also a popular tourist attraction. It complements Luxembourg City's other cable transport modes, including the Grund public elevator and the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg funicular. The project was carefully planned to avoid impacting the city's UNESCO World Heritage fortifications, and its construction included the addition of a footbridge connecting the elevator to the Pescatore Foundation Park. Since its inauguration, the elevator has facilitated easier access to walking and cycling trails and has supported local businesses and heritage tourism in Pfaffenthal.

History
The idea for the Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator emerged in 2006 as part of Luxembourg City's efforts to improve connectivity between Ville Haute and the Pfaffenthal valley.
After evaluating several options, including funiculars and escalators, planners chose an elevator due to cost and spatial constraints.
Construction began in late 2009 but was delayed by geological challenges, requiring additional funding in 2014.
The elevator was officially opened in July 2016, quickly becoming a vital link for pedestrians and cyclists and increasing tourist access to the area.
Plans for a third public elevator in the city were announced in 2017, inspired by the success of the Pfaffenthal and Grund elevators.
