The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Varaždin stands as one of northern Croatia's most important early Baroque sacral buildings. Constructed between 1642 and 1646 by the Jesuits, the cathedral features a single nave with six side chapels topped by two galleries. Jesuit Juraj Matota is credited as the visionary and construction leader, while Count Gašpar Drašković financed the project. The church's exterior is marked by a restrained and dignified simplicity, contrasting with an opulent interior highlighted by the monumental main altar completed in 1737. This altar, covering the entire width and height of the sanctuary, includes paintings inspired by masters like Rubens, Titian, and Reni, as well as statues of apostles and Jesuit saints. The sacristy, finalized in 1656 and remodeled in 1726, and the innovative bell tower completed in 1676, showcase architectural advancements, including pilasters that became widespread in the 18th century. The cathedral, along with the adjacent Jesuit College and former gymnasium buildings, represents the finest early Baroque architectural and urban ensemble in Varaždin. Today, it serves as the seat of the Varaždin Diocese, established in 1997, and remains a protected cultural monument.
