Memorial Area Barutana is a significant commemorative site located at the northwestern entrance to Bjelovar in the Bedenik forest, within the Hrgovljani district. It honors the fallen defenders who lost their lives during the defense of Bjelovar on September 29, 1991, amid the Croatian War of Independence. The site includes a central square with a monument dedicated to Croatian war veterans, a chapel, and an Informative-Educational Center managed by the Society for the Preservation of Croatian Military Tradition. The memorial complex also features the Bjelovar-Bilogora Defenders' Trail, which presents a detailed chronicle of key historical events from the dissolution of Yugoslavia through the Croatian War, including notable battles and military operations. An open-air exhibit displays military vehicles such as the T55 tank and the BVP M80 armored personnel carrier, the latter being the exact vehicle involved in the 1991 explosion at the nearby military depot. The area is set within a mature oak forest, symbolizing resilience and remembrance, and serves as a focal point for annual commemorations honoring both military and civilian victims. Renovated comprehensively in 2020 with support from the Croatian government, Barutana stands as a poignant testament to local history and sacrifice, blending solemn remembrance with educational outreach.

Geschichte

1991

The Memorial Area Barutana commemorates events from September 29, 1991, when Croatian forces attempted to seize a Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) ammunition depot in the Bedenik forest near Bjelovar.

During the conflict, Major Milan Tepić of the JNA detonated explosives in the depot to prevent capture, causing a massive explosion that left a 12-meter-deep crater and significant devastation.

The site was later established to honor those who died in the defense of Bjelovar during the Croatian War of Independence.

2020

In 2020, the memorial was fully restored, including the addition of educational facilities and outdoor exhibits, funded by the City of Bjelovar and the Croatian government.
