Geschichte

1878

The Lahti Market Square was established in the 1880s following the transformation of Hollolan Lahti village into a market town in 1878, after a devastating fire in 1877.

This transition moved the market from Asikkala's Anianpelto back to Lahti.

Originally named Aleksanterin tori, the square was half its current size and was also known as Raatihuoneen tori and Raastuvan tori, referencing the nearby town hall and local court.

1923

Over the decades, the square expanded and modernized, including the construction of a bus station in 1923 and a public restroom facility in the 1950s.

The 1990s saw a shift in retail focus to other parts of Lahti, but efforts were made to revitalize the market area.

2013

A major development was the construction of an underground parking garage beneath the square from 2013 to 2015, which enhanced accessibility while preserving the square's traditional market role.
