History
Blokhus was originally called Hune Hvarre and dates back to the early 1600s when timber was imported from Norway due to the scarcity of local trees.
The timber was stored in houses called 'block houses' (Danish: blokhuse), which gave the village its name.
Over time, Blokhus evolved into a popular beach town attracting around one million visitors annually.
The beach and surrounding dune plantation have been developed to support tourism and recreation, including the construction of a beach centre in 2011 and the transformation of the town square to include a shopping centre and outdoor stage for cultural events.
