Museo Vincenzo Vela is an artist museum located in Ligornetto, Ticino, Switzerland, primarily dedicated to the works of the renowned 19th-century sculptor Vincenzo Vela. The museum occupies the villa Vela built in the 1860s on a hillside overlooking his native village. It is notable for preserving one of Europe's most substantial collections of 19th-century sculptural models, including plaster models, terracotta, and marble works. The villa originally served a triple function as a residence, studio, and museum, which was innovative at the time. The museum also houses the family's art collections, including paintings by prominent northern Italian artists of the Risorgimento era and an important group of 19th-century photographs. The villa's park, part of the Grandi giardini italiani network, emphasizes biodiversity and hosts cultural events. The museum was the first public museum in Ticino and is recognized as a cultural property of national significance in Switzerland. After Vincenzo Vela's death, his son Spartaco bequeathed the villa and collections to the Swiss Confederation under conditions preserving public access and the integrity of the collection. The museum underwent extensive renovations between 1997 and 2001 led by architect Mario Botta, restoring the original exhibition layout to highlight both the artistic quality and creative process of Vela's works.
