Farroupilha Park
Rio Grande do Sul
Farroupilha Park, locally known as Parque da Redenção, is the most traditional and popular urban park in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Designed by French architect Alfred Agache and inaugurated in 1935, it occupies a historically significant site once called Várzea do Portão, a flooded lowland near the city's old gate. The park is surrounded by important avenues and close to the Historic Centre, making it a central recreational and cultural hub. It hosts numerous monuments, such as the Monument to the Expeditionary, and cultural venues like the Araújo Viana Auditorium. The park's landscape includes a lake with an island and a Belvedere, accessible by bridge, where visitors can rent paddle boats shaped like swans. Every weekend, the park comes alive with fairs like the Brique da Redenção, an open-air market featuring crafts, antiques, and food, and the Eco-Fair offering organic produce. The park serves as a beloved social space for locals to practice sports, enjoy the sun, and share mate with family and friends. Its rich history, vibrant cultural life, and scenic beauty make it a unique urban oasis in Porto Alegre.

History
The site of Farroupilha Park was originally known as Várzea do Portão, a flooded lowland near Porto Alegre's old city gate.
In 1807, the city council requested this land be donated for public use and cattle grazing.
Despite numerous attempts to divide or repurpose the land, its integrity was preserved through government intervention.
In 1870, it was named Campo do Bonfim after the construction of the Bonfim Chapel nearby.
The area was renamed Campos da Redenção in 1884 to celebrate the early abolition of slavery in Porto Alegre.
In 1935, for the centenary of the Ragamuffin War, the park was urbanized and renamed Parque Farroupilha, following designs by Alfred Agache.
Since then, it has evolved into a key cultural and recreational space in the city.
