Mangal das Garças is a renowned ecological park located on the banks of the Guamá River in the historic center of Belém, Pará, Brazil. Covering approximately 64,300 m², it was inaugurated in 2005 after revitalizing a former flooded area into a lush representation of the Amazon's diverse ecosystems. The park features native flora including over 300 species of trees and fauna such as wading birds, teals, and turtles. Visitors can explore various attractions including the towering 47-meter Belém Lighthouse offering panoramic views of Guajará Bay and the city, a butterfly sanctuary known as the José Márcio Ayres Reserve, and the Memorial Amazônico da Navegação that highlights regional history. The park's design harmoniously integrates the different floristic regions of Pará state, such as upland forests, floodplain forests, and fields. With lakes inhabited by local birds and aquatic species, scenic walkways, and cultural spaces like the Armazém do Tempo café, Mangal das Garças is both a natural oasis and cultural hub within the urban landscape of Belém.

History

2005

Mangal das Garças was officially opened on January 12, 2005, as part of a government initiative to revitalize a 40,000 m² area along the Guamá River in Belém’s historic district.

Previously a flooded area known as an extensive aningal, it was transformed into a botanical and zoological park representing the Amazon's rich biodiversity.

The park was designed to showcase Pará's major floristic regions and to provide a space for environmental education and tourism.

Over time, it has become one of Belém’s most important cultural and ecological landmarks, integrating natural habitats with urban surroundings.
