History
Mariana was founded in the late 17th century as the first settlement in what would become Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Originally part of the Capitania of Itanhaém, Portuguese bandeirantes explored the region seeking gold.
In 1711, the settlement was officially established as Vila do Ribeirão de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, later renamed Vila Real de Nossa Senhora and finally Cidade Mariana in 1745 in honor of Queen Maria Anna of Austria.
