The JK Memorial is a mausoleum, museum, and cultural center dedicated to Juscelino Kubitschek, the 21st President of Brazil and founder of Brasília. Located on the Monumental Axis in Brasília, this iconic white marble building was designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer at the request of Kubitschek's widow, Sarah. The memorial houses the former president's tomb and exhibits personal items such as his presidential sash, clothing from his inauguration, and his personal library. Artistic works by Athos Bulcão and Marianne Peretti enhance the interior, including a stained glass window that changes lighting with the sun's position. Outside, the memorial features a famous statue of Kubitschek by Honório Peçanha, elevated on a nearly 30-meter pedestal conceived by Niemeyer, which sparked some controversy due to its design inspiration. The surrounding grounds include water mirrors, gardens, and sculptures of Kubitschek and Sarah Kubitschek. The site is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm and is a significant cultural and historical landmark in Brazil's capital.

Geschichte

1976

Following the tragic death of Juscelino Kubitschek in 1976, his widow Sarah Kubitschek commissioned Oscar Niemeyer to design a memorial to honor his legacy.

1979

The project faced initial political obstacles and was only authorized under President JoĂŁo Baptista Figueiredo in 1979.

Fundraising campaigns led by Sarah and notable figures helped finance the construction.

1981

The memorial was completed in 17 months and inaugurated on September 12, 1981, coinciding with what would have been Kubitschek's 79th birthday.

Since then, it has been protected as a historic site by Brazil's IPHAN and local authorities.
