Mount Lofty Summit is the highest peak in the southern Mount Lofty Ranges, standing at 710 meters above sea level. Located approximately 15 kilometers east of Adelaide's city center, it is a popular destination for both international tourists and locals. The summit provides breathtaking panoramic views over Adelaide, the Adelaide Plains, and the Picadilly Valley. Visitors can enjoy walking trails, cycling routes, and a café-restaurant at the top. The area is rich in natural beauty and wildlife, with kangaroos occasionally spotted on the trails. The summit features a historic obelisk known as the Flinders Column, a key surveying reference point, and is also home to television transmission towers and a fire service lookout. The mountain experiences a cool Mediterranean climate, with occasional sleet and rare light snowfalls in winter, making it the coldest spot in the Adelaide region. Mount Lofty is accessible by road and popular for exercise circuits, including a 4 km uphill walk from Waterfall Gully through Cleland National Park. The surrounding area once hosted historic summer houses, which were damaged in the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires but have been restored since.

History

Mount Lofty was named by explorer Matthew Flinders in 1802 during his circumnavigation of Australia.

1831

The first recorded European ascent was by Collet Barker in 1831, predating Adelaide's settlement.

1885

A stone cairn originally marked the summit's trig point, replaced by an obelisk in 1885, later named the Flinders Column in 1902.

During World War II, the summit was closed to the public as the obelisk served as an important navigation aid, equipped with a flashing strobe light.

The strobe was removed after the war but reinstalled in the 1990s during restoration works.

1983

Historically, the summit area included summer homes of prominent families, many damaged in the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires and later restored.
