Seeschloss Ort
Oberösterreich
Seeschloss Ort is a picturesque castle complex located on a tiny island in Traunsee, within the town of Gmunden, Upper Austria. It comprises two castles: the renowned Seeschloss on the island and the Landschloss connected by a bridge. The Seeschloss is one of the oldest buildings in the Salzkammergut region, originally documented as early as 909 and 1053. It began as a water fortress and was reconstructed after a destructive fire in 1626 into its current form featuring an irregular layout around a triangular courtyard with late Gothic arcades and an external staircase. Historically, the castle was ruled by the Lords of Ort from the 10th century until 1244, before passing through various owners, including the Habsburg emperors. In the 17th century, it was a site of conflict during the Upper Austrian Peasant Wars, notably suffering damage during the 1626 battles. The castle gained wider popularity in modern times as the filming location of the German-Austrian TV series "Schlosshotel Orth" (1996–2004), attracting many visitors annually. Today, owned by the city of Gmunden since 1995, Seeschloss Ort serves as both a museum and a venue for cultural events, weddings, and private functions, accessible via a 123-meter bridge. Visitors can explore original dungeon cells and the historic architecture that reflects centuries of regional history.
