Korçë Cathedral
Korçë
The Resurrection of Christ Cathedral in Korçë stands as the main Albanian Orthodox church in the city and the largest in Albania. Constructed between 1979 and 1990, it replaced the former St. George Cathedral destroyed by communist authorities in 1968 during anti-religious campaigns. Architect Dhimitër Kristidhi from Thessaloniki designed the cathedral, which features a cross-shaped concrete structure with a dome, four apses, and surrounding porticos. The exterior is adorned with decorative stone and brick, while two bell towers rise on the western corners, each housing five bells. Inside, the modest white interior is dominated by a large, artistically carved wooden iconostasis, a central element of Orthodox worship. The cathedral also includes a basement level containing a chapel, baptismal area, and rooms for various activities. Its pink, blue, and brown painted exterior makes it visually distinctive in Korçë's city center. The cathedral symbolizes the restoration of religious practices in Albania after decades of prohibition from 1966 to 1990, serving as a cultural and spiritual landmark for both locals and visitors.
