History

1983

Originally known as Sri Timah, the building was the private residence of Malaysia Mining Corporation before being converted into the official residence of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad from August 1983 to October 1999.

2000

After Mahathir's tenure, the residence was handed over to the National Archives Department in August 2000.

2003

Galeria Perdana was officially opened to the public in December 2003 by then Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

2023

The gallery temporarily closed during the COVID-19 pandemic and again in 2023 for a major upgrade and preservation project under Malaysia's 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK11), reopening in July 2025.
